File Servers
On-prem file server shares are backed up through a lightweight local agent, separate from the Microsoft 365 workloads.
What's captured
A small local agent runs on or alongside the file server, enrolls with BYOVault, and backs up file content from configured shares.
What's not captured
File content only — no permissions or ACLs
The file server agent backs up file content only. NTFS permissions and access-control lists are not captured or restored — restoring a file returns its content, not its original permission set.
Restoring file server data
File server backups follow the same per-file restore model as the other workloads — see Restore Limitations for what that does and doesn’t cover.
