Restore Limitations
Restore in BYOVault is strictly per-file and per-item. Stated plainly, because it changes how you'd plan for a large-scale recovery.
No bulk restore
There is no “restore this entire drive”, “restore this entire site”, or “restore this entire mailbox” action. Every restore — download, drive-inject, or exchange-inject — operates on one file, one file version, or one mail item at a time.
What this means in practice
Recovering a single accidentally deleted file, or an email a user needs back, works exactly as you’d expect — browse to it, pick a version, restore it. Recovering everything a user had after a full account loss or a ransomware event means restoring items individually rather than kicking off one job that reconstructs an entire drive or mailbox in bulk.
What is still true
- Every version of every item ever backed up is retained and individually restorable — see Version History.
- Restores can run back-to-back across many items; there just isn’t a single bulk-restore operation that does it as one action.
- Downloads and in-place restores are both checksum-verified against the content’s original SHA-256.
